Sunday Sevens – Week 42 – My 3rd Attempt

Ha! Just a little glitch in my learning curve. I thought that I had scheduled this post to publish on Sunday…..I don’t know what I did wrong. Better late than never?!

I have been enjoying following the Sunday Sevens Weekly Blog Series created by Natalie from Threads & Bobbins. I have been ‘meeting’ more and more new friends around the world.  I also have been enjoying the opportunity to open my eyes to my every day life and capture things that I normally take for granted but am looking at differently now as I have the chance to share these with all of you. This really is fun and I hope you enjoy my offerings from my week.

I have been quite busy this week. I love to share my sewing knowledge with others. I teach classes at our city’s park & recreation. I do not consider myself an expert sewist. I just love to share what I am passionate about. This week started a 5 week Summer Camp series where I am teaching 3 mornings per week and I have 2 evening classes as well. There are up to 6 kids in each camp session and 3 or 4 in my evening classes.

On top of all of that I have been working on some projects for myself. Last year, I wore out a pair of shorts that I absolutely loved. You know the pair. They fit just right. They are so comfortable. So, I took them apart (at least half of them) to make a pattern from them. I kept the other half in tack so I could have a visual of how they were suppose to go back together. I have made 3 new pair from my pattern. 2 of them I made this week.

1 –  A rayon pair.

flower shorts

2 – And a denim pair.

3 – The fur baby loves his little corner of my sewing room.

4 – On my way in to teach classes one morning I caught a glimpse of Carter’s Mountain from the 3rd floor of the parking garage. We have some gorgeous views in this area.

5 – Ok, so I didn’t take this photo. My daughter took it in our backyard and forwarded it to me while I was working at the fabric store on Wednesday. It was too cute not to share. The fawn is only a few weeks old.

6 – Here’s a elevator shot of the historic downtown mall. I love working downtown. Both the fabric store and the recreation center that I teach at are located here.

7 – I found a box of tiles at our local Habitat Store that I think will work perfectly in finishing my kitchen remodel. I purchased 110 of these tiles from Italy for 25 cents a piece. I am planning to get back into the many remodeling projects we have once I finish all of my Summer Camps.

That’s it for my week. The hubs and I are off to Columbia, MD this weekend for our first Track and Field event of the Summer. He told me the other day that I am just 7/10th’s 0f a meter from All American status in the shot put for my age bracket. I will be throwing discus and shot put on Sunday, my birthday. Achieving All American would be a fun way to celebrate. Wish me luck.

Sunday Seven Week 41 (my attempt #2)

sunday sevens new logo

I enjoy following Thimberlina and Natalie’s Sunday Sevens. I only hope that everyone enjoys checking out what’s going on in my world.

I had a pretty hectic week and found it to be a challenge to try to record it all. I guess this can be par for the course.

IMG_1893

We went to Pennsylvania for a celebration of my neice’s high school graduation. It is about a 6 hour drive and we decided to stay over night on the way up. We found a place that served ice cream in Bethel, PA named Kauffman’s. They also have miniature golf and serve bar-b-q. I liked the chicken statue. He had a fence around him to help keep him contained.

Have you ever had a baked potato explode in the oven? I have heard of it happening if you don’t poke through the skins before putting them in the oven. I had poked many holes in the potatoes a few hours before they were to go into the oven as I had to leave to teach one of my sewing classes. The hubby was to just put them into the oven in time to coordinate the rest of dinner when I got home. I don’t know what happened. It was rather funny. The next morning I just used my kitchen brush to sweep all the mess to the bottom of the oven and used my portable vacuum to clean the mess up.

My potted basil has been trying to flower and I have been pinching back the blossoms until I was ready to make some pesto from these plants. We finally did that and applied it to a spatchcock chicken that we fixed on the grill. I love pesto (made from basil). My 2 little plants were enough for that meal but, I have no more basil to make more. Thank goodness for the farmer’s markets.

Books I won

Several months ago I entered a give away offered on Celina’s blog Petit a Petit and Family. I was the lucky recipient of both the books from her give away. I am really excited to get started on some projects for my grandchildren. I love the simple style of these designers.

Sebastian Haircut

This is my 11 year old dog, Sebastian. He is what we call a designer mutt. He is half cocker spaniel and half poodle or a cock-a-poo. He doesn’t shed and his hair grows. I have to cut his hair every couple of months because I am too cheap to pay someone else to do it. It has been so hot here already this summer (today is officially Summer) that he was very appreciative of his ordeal. (Cut and bath – all in one day)

BigRain from Bill

The remnants of Tropical Storm Bill arrived in our area and with our unstable air it created several thunderstorms that contained heavy downpours. 2 storms, back to back gave us almost 1 1/2 inches of rain in less than an hour and overnight we got about another 1/4″. That’s a lot of rain.

I hope that you all have had a great week. And that you have enjoyed a peek into mine. I have a lot of new schedules coming up this week. Another hectic week.

Sunday Seven Week 40 (My First Attempt)

I have been following Thimberlina for a while now. She really cracks me up with all of her cleverness. She seems to have so much fun. I have really begun to enjoy her posts of Sunday Seven which is the brainchild of Natalie of Threads and Bobbins. So, I started following her too. (Isn’t this how it all starts?) At any rate, I kind of got hooked. To play this game you have to collect 7 photos from your week and post them on Sunday. Not exactly a blog post but, I think this may actually help me to become a better blogger or at least have me sitting down and writing on a regular basis. It’s got to be a good thing. Right?

So here goes…late to the game but, giving it my all!

1…just a bit of self indulgence.

Pool Time

2…this is the time of year for Mulberries. These bushes/trees are all along the sidewalks. They are terribly messy to step on. The birds and other wildlife love them. Yes, I live in a small city and we have wildlife. Maybe I should plant some mulberry in my yard so the deer will leave my day lilies alone.

Mulberries

3…time for Water Aerobics. We are lucky enough to live only a couple of houses from this members-only pool. The club is 80-some years old and has a recently renovated Olympic size pool, tennis courts, volley ball and club house with a ballroom.

Water aerobics

4…I had my daughter pick me up from work so we could swing by the Wednesday in the Park Farmer’s Market. Lots of fresh veggies and we enjoyed a hand fashioned Popsicle.

Wed Farmer's Market

5…out with the old kitchen counters..

Old kitchen

and in with the new..

New kitchen

6…our yard desperately needs some love. My back can only handle but so much weeding and my hubby is into his second bout of poison ivy this season. I am allergic to tons of other stuff EXCEPT poison ivy. So, I am tackling this yard while paying attention to keeping my back healthy. As we are now into super summer heat, I can really only tolerate an hour or so very early in the morning. I think it’s a good strategy.

Gardening

7…we participate in throwing events of Masters Track and Field Competitions. Hubby was on Track & Field team in high school so, he is enjoying this. I never did any of this in school. (I was into writing and boys) In order to spend more time with the Mister I decided to give it a whirl. We practice on the weekends when ever we can find the fields empty. It’s actually kind of fun and at my age there is not a tremendous amount of competition. So at the meets, I usually win a ribbon. I am also trying to improve my distances each year. So far, I have only competed in Shot Put and Discus. This year I will add throwing the Hammer. I also have a Javelin and a Weight. They are planned in next year’s goals.

Sat

That’s it for me. A somewhat exciting week. As I am checking my calendar I see that next week will include more adventures. I promise to stay with this. I hope you all enjoyed a peek into my side of the world as much as I enjoy peering into yours. Have a great week.

I Won a Quilt

I love to sew! I love to share my skills with others. I sew all kinds of things. I sew my clothes. I sew clothes for my grand kids. I sew for my kids. I make curtains, pillows and window coverings.I have even dabbled in quilting.

I do not consider myself a quilter. I keep saying that I am saving quilting for when I get old. (I am almost 59 years young) I don’t know why I have decided that quilting is something that old ladies do. And I guess I really don’t believe that either. There are just so many other things to sew (or knit or crochet) that I don’t want to add another “addiction”. I do love quilts and really appreciate what goes into making them.

At any rate…I entered a raffle for a 97″ X 97″ quilt to benefit our local SARA (Sexual Assault Resource Agency) and SHE (Shelter for Help in Emergency). I bought 10 $1 tickets. Last Sunday, I received a call from a very excited woman.

“May I speak with Robyn?”

“Speaking”, I said.

“I am calling to tell you that you won!” She paused and I almost hung up as I usually do for those annoying telemarketing calls telling you that you’ve won a trip to who-knows-where-because-it-doesn’t-matter-as-there-is-always-a-catch.

“You won the quilt from the raffle.”, she said.

And then I remembered buying the tickets.

I was very excited and picked up my quilt the next day.

DSC_0001

It is beautiful. It is titled “Posies & Pineapples” which was designed by Karen Kay Buckley and it was appliqued and pieced by the Charlottesville Area Quilt Guild and machine quilted by Jeannie Allen. It has this beautiful embroidered label.

DSC_0006

It is truly a treasure.

DSC_0004

I don’t have any walls large enough to display it and my spoiled dog loves to be on our bed so I am afraid to lay it out there. I certainly do not wish to store it away and not be able to enjoy it.

What are some other creative ways to display quilts? Do you have any to share?

Birthday Boxers

February is a big month in our house for birthdays. It’s a short month but, we have 5 birthdays. Actually the birthday parade begins on the 24th of January and rolls right on through the 22nd of February so, that is 6 birthdays in about 4 weeks.

So, to stay in tune with sewing and not buying clothes I have been busy at my sewing machine. That is until I caught the yucky winter crud that’s going around which has turned into a sinus infection. But, I have gotten a good start on things.

IMG_1465

I made two pair of these 5 panel boxers. One pair for hubby and one pair for my step-son. They are similar in size and build. They both got bacon boxers. So, I cut both pair out at the same time with the intention of sewing them at the same time. That is until I came upon the french seams. I have sewn french seams before and I really enjoy sewing them but for some reason I just could not keep my head wrapped around placing the wrong sides together to stitch the seam. After ripping out a couple of seams I made the decision to slow it down and sew just one pair at a time.

It worked. I got through both pair and each pair was a huge hit with their recipients.

I also made a pair of “Frozen” pajamas to send off to the other side of the world and forgot to take a picture of them. But, I have another pair of them to make so I will take and post pictures of those later.

I still have a couple of more birthdays to get through this month. I wonder what other sewing I can do. I wonder if my sinuses will clear up enough for me to enjoy it.

Sewing for the New Year 2015

Last year I made a resolution not to purchase any clothing (with the exception of underwear and jeans) in an attempt to protest the fast fashion movement and the deplorable conditions in which most of our clothing is made. I must say that I did pretty good, for me. I made it until the end of July. Darn you JJill for opening a store in my area! I guess I have a weakness.  But, a new year allows one to begin again. Right? So, I downloaded the book “Over Dressed The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion” by Elizabeth L. Cline. And have begun anew with my resolution to not contribute to the madness. (disclosure-I am not affiliated with Amazon or anyone else. I just like the book)

My oldest daughter loved the Christmas apron that I gave her (picture? Um, I knew I forgot something) and requested two more for everyday wear. She then suggested that it be two sided. So, I made it 2-sided. And took pictures!

2 sided apron other side

She Loves it!

Well, I had a bit of fun purchasing fabric online during the end-of-year-clearance and got right to work sewing up a couple of 3/4 length sleeve hack of Cake Patterns No 2224 The Tee. Love this pattern! I have made a few of these and I love the longer sleeve option for the colder winter months. I absolutely love making my own clothes so I can create a sleeve length that I am comfortable with (I can’t stand long sleeves) and I can adjust the length of my hems to a length that I want. Which I did here as I wanted a bit more coverage to cover some holiday pounds – yep, another New Year’s resolution, sigh.

This one is made of Bamboo. So soft and warm.

Gray thermal t-shirt Gray thermal t-shirt 2

And this is a Thermal Stripe. Also warm and comfy.

Another resolution for the new year is to improve my photography. And therefore improve on my blogging. As you can see by the above photos, I still need improvements in my selfies. A lot of improvements. I also just have to get over myself.

beautiful orchid orchid 2

But, I hope that I can redeem myself with these shots of my blooming orchid. I have had this orchid for several years now and it blooms like this every winter. It is my strength to help me through the cold. Did I ever mention how much I had the cold?

More sewing post coming soon. How are your New Year’s Resolutions coming along? I’d love to hear them and how you are sticking (or not) to them. And I would love to see any sewing that you’ve done. Or crafting of any type.

Wall Hanging is hanging

I posted pictures of the beautiful wall hanging that I received for Christmas that my son and daughter-in-law sent me from Laos. I have finally gotten a hanger attached to it and tacked the backing down a bit so it will hang nicely.

I am really pleased with this as it’s the first thing that people see when they enter our home.

Caring for your fabric, before you even lay it on the cutting table

I love to shop for fabric. It is actually therapy for me, as it is for so many others.

I used to work a regular 40 hour per week job. It was a stressful job full of deadlines and grumpy coworkers and even more grumpy bosses. When I left work, I went home to a houseful of rambunctious children. And I was taking night classes at the community college a couple of nights per week. Yes, I lived a stressful life!

I started seeking out places that I could escape to. Just for a lunch hour. Where I could feel at peace and do a little day dreaming. At first I tried a walk around the block. It really wasn’t relaxing as there were only a few sidewalks and lots of cement mixer trucks or gasoline tankers flying up the road.

Eventually, I found a nearby fabric store. It was full of beautiful fabrics and it was full of smiling, laughing, creative people. I would just go and browse and feel the fabric and dream of dresses and skirts. Of course, I found many pieces that I just had to purchase. Just a yard or two. And so my stash began to grow….

Once I have gotten my fabric home, how did I care for it? I used to just fold it up and put it on a shelf until I was inspired by a perfect pattern. Then I would have to wash and dry the fabric before I could begin working on my project. Wait! You do know to wash your fabric first to minimize potential shrinking, right? I usually lost my momentum after this because if I was going to wash my fabric, I really should wash a load or two of the household laundry that was piling up (my mother’s voice in my head). After all that I was no longer inspired to start working on my project.

Now, I wash my fabric as soon as I get home, or very shortly after. I always wash and dry my fabric as I intend to care for my finished garment. I am referring to fabric for garments here. Once it’s washed and dried, I iron it.

I love to iron. There I’ve said it. I always have. What is it about ironing that so many people hate? I just don’t understand. Anyway, I digress.

When I pull my fabric from the washer the cut ends are usually a bit tangled but, after it comes out of the dryer it is usually ten times worse and needed to have all those tangled threads trimmed as I am ironing.

I saw on the internet some people who had mention in a few places about running a zigzag stitch along those cut edges before washing it. Or if you have a serger then you could just zip it through before washing. So, I tried it.

finish the raw edges

finish the raw edges

And you know what? It’s a miracle. There is no “it’s better”. It’s simply “perfect”. I had wasted so much time in the past. I have learned this lesson well. Every piece of fabric that comes into my home now has it’s cut edges serged first and then it’s washed and dried and yes, ironed.

Nice and neat and easy.

Christmas Gift From The Other Side Of The World

I love receiving presents. Who doesn’t, right? No, really. It always amazes me the thought that goes into gift giving. I guess that I am a difficult person to buy for. I try not to be. But, I am the type of person who buys what I like, for myself. I am realizing that this type of personality makes a difficult person to buy for.

So, I am really amazed when I receive gifts that really make me say, “Wow”. Like this one…

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/cfc/33640960/files/2014/12/img_1426-0.jpg

I love this. It’s a tapestry that came from Laos. The colors are a perfect match to my current scheme. I have the perfect spot to display it where everyone who enters my home will see it. And this morning I found the solution to hanging it in the selected spot. It’s all coming together so beautifully. “Wow!”

I will post a picture of it once all the Christmas decorations have been packed away and my house is back to it’s normal arrangement. I may even be able to use the new camera lens that I did ask Santa to bring me. You know. The real Santa from Macy’s in NYC. (wink, wink)

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/cfc/33640960/files/2014/12/img_1408.jpg

He was really a cool dude!

I hope your holiday was wonderful. What cool gifts did you receive? Please share.

Travel Tic-Tac-Toe Game Tutorial

016

A couple of summers ago I was teaching a sewing workshop at the neighborhood pool to a handful of kids who were members of the swim team. Class attendance wasn’t consistent so in an effort to encourage enrollment I decided that I needed to create classes that were simple and could be finished within a couple of hours. I came up with the idea of this game board that was totally portable so the kids could take this with them to swim meets and have something to do during those long breaks between swimming events. Felt is fairly easy to work with and sticks well enough to itself to be used as a travel game board. This finished project will work well in most any other travel situation to keep kids busy.

Supplies You Will Need:

  • 2 Felt Squares 16 X 16 inches (but you can make it any size you wish) I used black & red for the swim team colors
  • 9 X 12 inch pieces of felt White, Green and Brown (or and color combo you wish)
  • Tape measure/ruler
  • Scissors
  • Sewing Machine
  • Thread
  • Snaps or Velcro Dots
  • Scrap Card Board for templates

002003

Begin by cutting your base felt board pieces to 16 X 16. And cutting the white into 4 strips that measure 1″ X 12″.

004

Lay the white strip onto one of the felt board pieces so they form a grid. Pin in place and stitch with a zigzag stitch all the way around each edge of the strips to secure in place. Set this felt board piece aside.

006005

On the other felt board square position your snaps or Velcro dots about 6 – 8 inches in from opposite corners. The kids had a blast using hammers and snap setting tools on their projects.

010

Take both felt board square with right sides together and sew all the way around leaving about 5 inches opened on one side to turn your project right side out. Don’t forget to trim your corners before turning to reduce bulk.

012

Now give your square felt board a quick press with an iron and stitch about 1/4″ all the way around making sure to close the opening left for turning. Your game board is complete.

013

I cut templates from card board in the shapes of a circle and and X and cut 5 green circles and 5 brown X’s.

014

015

Now for the roll up for travel —

018019

Lay all your game pieces onto the felt board where you have sewn the grid strips. Turn it so it looks like a diamond with the fastener sides pointing towards and away from you. Pull the left and the right corners in to the center. Fold the top corner and the bottom corners towards the center . Roll it up until the snaps meet and fasten.

023024

Have fun and let me know how your travel game board turns out.
