I’ve been busy…

I usually hate to make New Years Resolutions. I somehow feel like it’s just a way to set myself up for failure. How many diets/exercise plans/starts/stops, whatever have I declared as ‘this time I will…’ and well, you know how that turns out.

But, this year I thought why not concentrate on something I will truly enjoy. Something that I can even keep track of and even … hmmmm… blog about. Okay, sewing! Crafting! Knitting! Photos! So, I got busy.

I have a confession. I have been accused of being the cobbler who made shoes for the whole village while his own children went barefoot. Guilty as charged. I had black out curtains hanging in my bedroom for years. Store bought, unadorned. Just a simple valance and, get this, clothes pins (yes, clothes pins) to tie them opened during the day. No, I did not take a picture of them to share. I am sure you can use your own imaginations to visualize that. I finally spotted a style of roman shades that I liked. With that in mind, I quickly found a fabric and now I have relaxed roman shades finished and hanging in my bedroom. I still may add a valance. I haven’t quite decided as of yet.

Then, I made two Blank Canvas T-shirts (from http://3hourspast.com/). The first was made from a loosely woven knit and I wasn’t happy with the neck. I finished it by cutting a slit and turning it inward. I like it better that way and I really only intended it to be a muslin to wear around the house.

The second is a heavier double-knit and I like the way it turned out much better. I just need to learn to take better pictures of myself (all in good time).

Then I made some business cards. I made 20 of these to begin with. I have really enjoyed handing these out to people. They really are cute. I saw several varieties online. I have already changed them for the next batch to include my email address and to add an “&” because one person read it out loud as ‘custom sewing lessons’. It now reads ‘custom sewing & lessons’.

I have started a rather long list of projects to work on. In fact, I add to it quite often. So I guess I am feeling encouraged with my resolutions this year. At least with this one. How about you? How are your new year’s resolutions going?

Diaper Covers

Okay…I love making children’s clothing. I sewed a lot when my children were small. I could easily make a cute little outfit from an inexpensive remnant. As they got older I continued to sew for them but, not as much.

I made my daughter’s wedding dress a few years ago….Image

It was beautiful. Exactly what she’d wished for. (Oh and that is all the siblings of the happy couple….minus one…yes, most of them are mine)

Well, now I have grandchildren to sew for…and again I am enjoying that. I will post pictures later.

I tried teaching sewing classes this summer at Joann Fabrics. It was a rather short teaching career. I learned a lot and plan to continue on my own after the first of the year. I am ironing out the detail for that now.

Being a rather newish grandma, I wanted to try my hand at making diaper covers with the new PUL (polyurethane laminated) fabrics. Water proof, drapes nicely, breathable and comes in cute colors and prints. The store was promoting Babyville Boutique and they carry many fabric packs and all the supplies you could possibly need including two books of projects.

Now most of my six children were raised in cloth diapers and I am very familiar with them and the rubber pants. I thought rubber pants were awful things. But, this product had me excited about trying it. A class never developed but, I played anyway.

I read the basic instructions for the diaper covers. Hmmm. I still had questions. For instance, the recommended elastic sizes really confused me as it tells you to cut 2 of the leg elastic. The instructions seemed as thought you are to sew the elastic on as one continuous piece. So I went to their web site http://www.babyvilleboutique.com. Well, that confirmed that it was to be one continuous piece of elastic. You are to stretch the elastic as you are stitching to create the elastic fit (gathers) in the legs and across the back. (on the second diaper cover I made I also created that gathered effect on the front. Just a little as I thought it might fit better. I also lined mine with a thin flannel. I just felt like it should be there. Here is the first one.

And another picture –

Cute, huh?

On the web site there was a tab for other projects. So, of course, I had to check it out. They had instructions for a reusable wipe. I liked it as it seemed a great way to use up scraps.

Folding it pictured above and all rolled up pictured below.

Pretty clever. But, in hind sight….I will use terry clothe as the lining and attach the snaps to the outer fabric before sewing the the two layers together. I wouldn’t want to wipe my grandchild’s face with a plastic snap. (I followed the instructions then decided to write my own)

Here are both diaper covers and wipes –

What do you think? I have been thinking about the concept of being ‘green’ and the use of clothe diapers. I really like the idea. I’m just not too sure how ‘green’ the PUL fabric might be. But, it is much nicer than the old fashioned rubber pants and a heck of a lot cuter. If you have any questions or thoughts I’m happy to reply. I am happy to share more photos too.

Thanks!

My First Post

I am trying another site for tracking my projects. I am anticipating my blogging abilities to grow in time. I want to share with others some of the things that I have been enjoying working on. But, first just a little background of what fuels my creative fire.

Textures. All kinds. I love fabric, yarn, and paper.

Colors. Rich earth tones or bright, vibrant color. It all depends on any given day or any given season.

I love to look for fabrics and yarn online but, seldom will I purchase anything there, except books or patterns. I have to feel and see the fibers first hand to know if it’s right for me. (in fact one of my best methods of therapy is to wander the shelves of fabric stores). Okay, truth be told, I love ironing my fabric pieces. Silly things like that make me happy.

Overtime I will post some of the past projects that I’ve made. For now I want to share my next big project.

Fabrics in waiting

There is enough fabric here for several small projects.

Part of this stash includes a panel that I purchased here at a quilt shop along with the black and gold piece at the top. The small quilt that I plan to make will be a keepsake for my oldest granddaughter of her birth place. I can hardly wait to get started working on it.
